well... this came at a time when I need it most and I wish I could personally take brie's hand and thank her. it is laugh-out-loud funny it is actual-tear-running-down-cheek emotional it is don't-even-wanna-pause-to-go-get-a-beverage entertaining, to me it was worth every single second and more. i could go on about why I need this and give you a personal account of all my problems at this point in my life but I don't care anymore, this was what I needed to hear and see and now I have so there's no point moping in the letterboxd review box. let's just sit with what we've heard. go watch this guys !! I truly hope you love it like me.

this was a cute and harmless way to spend 92 minutes! :)

anyway, i’m glad my favorite tv actor hamish linklater is getting work. that’s okay if you don’t recognize the name; i’ve been quietly obsessed with him since 2006 and only learned it a full decade later when he popped up in the big short. i was like “hey! that’s that tv actor i heavily repressed my feelings for when i was a weird middle schooler and still kind of repress now to be honest! wish i knew his name!”

his name is hamish linklater and*troy mcclure voice* you may remember him from such programs asthe newsroom S2, fargo S3, pushing daisies S1E05, the legion pilot, and every episode…

A millennial fairy tale that’s very confused about who actually belongs to that demographic cohort (aren’t we all), Brie Larson’s “Unicorn Store” is too adult for kids, too childlike for adults, and too muddled for the motley lot of misfits and dreamers who just want to think different. It’s a movie that sustains its strained plot with a huge heart — a movie that redeems its empty characters with a terrific cast. Most of all, it’s a movie that reminds you why “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” opted not to have a subplot about sexual harassment.

Harmless and deep down pretty charming but it’s just so awkward for all the wrong reasons. Some of the performances and editing made this feel like a student film. I do like Brie Larson, she’s the best part about this, but damn. Will talk about it more on the next Karstcast.

  • Review by Josh Lewis 35

“Am I pretty enough to be sexually harassed?” Complete nonsense. Larson seems like a nice enough person but I can't believe she used her Oscar clout on this truly awful screenplay that she then bizarrely realizes as some sort of saccharine Sundance indie take on 13 Going on 30 but with such little concept, character or... genuine interest it's kind of baffling. Not just on a macro level but on a moment-to-moment one as well; the basic scenes sort of track based on our knowledge of movies like this (obnoxious quirk, notwithstanding) but require a lot of assumed context that might provide sense or meaning to them, and the scenes that include that context just... never come? Characters simply start…

someone asks brie larson’s character about her long term goals and she says to not be a constant disappointment to everyone and i’ve never related to anything more than that

I guess I get why this didn't work for some people, maybe it's a little twee and nicecore to the point of having no conflict and it's phenomenonally optimistic but I think those things might be exactly why I liked it so much.

it's a movie about being lost in your early 20s, about reminiscing on your childhood and being so focused on your one perfect representation of success and happiness that you can't see every little good thing happening around you. and all of those things are hard but this movie and Brie Larson's incredibly charming performance refuse to wallow in the lows, even when maybe a little wallowing is earned.

Unicorn Store's optimism works not in spite of…
